What is this?

This was a pure advertising site. Just about any advertiser was welcome to make his or her pitch here. The ad didn't have to compete with other ads or anything else for attention. On this site, the ad was the content.

Past tense?

Yes. This site went through several iterations and variations on its business model, but never started earning enough to be worth the time investment. It will continue to exist until October 2011, per my stated agreement with the advertisers-- but we are no longer accepting new ads nor actively maintaining it. For the rest of its five-year life, One Simple Ad will exist as a monument to interesting ideas, and a reminder that they don't always catch on.
